Intelligent pension planning

Massive global financial instability is once again snatching the headlines, creating panic in financial markets and causing concern for individuals saving for retirement and close to retirement age. Recognising the fact that volatility in markets is something we need to expect in the years to come is vital in managing pension and personal assets to keep capital largely secure and generate income, both for retirement needs and as a real source of investment returns. There are ways to mitigate risk and still gain exposure to markets and this has become increasingly important within this volatile economic background.

The seminar will include topics such as –

1. Investment management – managing assets in volatile times and the role of pension and personal assets in holistic planning, including an update on the economic backdrop.

2. Legislation – threats and opportunities. In April 2012 we will see a reduction in the lifetime allowance which can be mitigated, but which has brought to the fore other non-pension options, and we will explain how other arrangements can complement current UK pension legislation. There is the option to contribute in excess of the annual allowance, and the heightened ability to pass pension assets from one generation to the next – even spending your pension before you die!

3. Business planning – the ability of self-invested pension schemes to be involved in connected transactions with the business, providing a significant level of control over pension assets. Also, for a SSAS or SIPP to help with business financing in view of continued restrictions on borrowings, and/or provide a safety net should the business get into difficulties.

4. Automatic enrolment – employer compulsory pension – an update on what it means, the dates, employer liability and the impact on your clients.
